Description:

An excellently carved piece, nearly the entire surface of the main body has a finely detailed texture applied, and the nearly bone white color of the meerschaum is accented with hints of tan. Measuring 13 inches long, 5 3/20 inches tall and 3 1/5 inches wide, depicting a family of bears around the stump of a cut down tree, from which the bowl of the pipe emerges. Six bears, in total, are visible, two adults and 4 offspring. On the left side of the pipe are three of the bear cubs at play, with two of them wrestling on the ground while the larger of the two adults looks on, while the third cub, rearing up on its back paws, is squaring off against the second adult. Meanwhile, on the reverse side, the fourth cub is making good progress at climbing up to the bowl. Excluding the bowl, bears, a pair of leafy branches and the cuts in the wood, the entire main body has been done in a very well executed bark texture, with equal attention paid to the fur of the bears and the rings in the exposed sections of the wood. Fitted with a amber stem and mouthpiece.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. Overall the pipe has a nice aged patina. The pair of wrestling cubs has a worn flat spot and what looks to be a minor crack. There are some scattered minor chips. The stem is very good. All and all a high conditioned massive pipe. A shining example of the meerschaum carvers art, and they quite literally do not make them like this anymore.
