Description:

Measuring a massive 12 inches in length, 3 4/5" tall and 2 3/5" wide, the main body of the pipe is an attractive cream color with light brown tints overall, with deeper brown color on the underside near the stem and on the carved scene. Arranged on the stem is a three dimensional scene of a group of seven sailors relaxing during a downtime; at the center of activity is three sailors playing a game of cards, with cargo bundles pressed into service as an improvised table and chairs, three more sailors watching the game, smoking while reclining on the stem, leaning against the bowl, or seated on a cargo bundle, while the last sailor attempts to get the attention of one of the observing sailors. On the front of the bowl is Hermes, aka Mercury, Greek/ Roman god of messengers, commerce and journeys, with his caduceus, winged sandals, and a conveniently placed fig leaf, backed by a wreath and a cargo bundle with an anchor through it. The level of detail of the carving is extreme, to the point of visible seams on some of the sailors' pants and individually rendered feathers on the caduceus. Mouthpiece is amber, with silver bands at the midpoint and the joint with the stem, the latter with a lightly engraved border and marked "1 (Crown) 930".

Rating Definition:

Excellent. There is a nice pleasing aged patina showing the right amount of age. The pipe is in amazingly good condition showing only very minor repair to a sailor's hat (looks like a tiny crack) and some flattening of the scattered edges. Mouthpiece has a hairline crack which is barely visibly. Silver band is excellent, with a nice aged patina forming, particularly on the front band.
