Description:

Designed and made by Edward Lindner of Manchester, New Hampshire, probably at Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. Only 892 of the First Type carbines were made and all were for military contracts, (November, 1861, 391 to the 1st Michigan Cavalry and late 1863, 501 to the 8th West Virginia Mounted Infantry). The carbine has a fixed blade front sight and two-leaf folding rear sight mounted behind the breechblock. It is correctly marked, only on the top of the breechblock "EDWARD LINDNER'S / PATENT / MARCH 29, 1859". There is a small "J" on the right side of the breechblock. An oval script inspection mark, (AM?), is stamped on the stock comb just ahead of the buttplate. The stock is oil-finished walnut, with a metal forearm tip and sling ring on the left stock flat. The left side of the buttstock is stamped with intertwined "V"s signifying issue to the West Virginia Mounted Infantry.

Rating Definition:

Near fine. All metal surfaces except the breechblock and lock have a crisp smooth brownish patina while the breechblock and lock have a smooth grayish patina. The stock is fine with some overall scattered minor scratches, dents and dings. The breech markings are crisp. Mechanically fine. A very nice, extremely rare 1st Type Lindner Carbine.
