Description:

U.S. Army M1881 Dress Helmet with blue felt body and black horse hair plume. The helmet is fitted with a cast brass infantry plate with an eagle and shield and crossed rifles, brass infantry, crossed rifle, side buttons and a gilded brass mounted plume socket on a cast oak leaf base. The helmet has never been fitted with a chinstrap and lacks the regulation brass scrolls and rings fitted to helmets for mounted troops to secure the helmet cords. The shield on the helmet plate lacks the silver regimental number usually applied to the helmet plates. The helmet has a tan leather sweat band a "6 7/8" size tag. Accompanying the helmet is a deluxe U.S. Army M1902 Officer's Saber with eagle head pommel. The saber pommel is a cast, detailed, silver-plated, eagle head with ruby eyes. The three-branch guard and back of the grip are decorated with a cast eagle feather motif. The cast grip is black with four finger grooves. The saber has a regulation pattern 28-inch blade. The blade is decorated with gold washed relief etching that consists of the United States Crest and foliate designs on the reverse and "US" surrounded by foliate etching on the obverse. The reverse ricasso has a Star of David marker's mark with a round, inlaid proof. "GERMANY" is stamped on the obverse ricasso. The German silver plated scabbard has silver-plated suspension bands and drag with relief cast floral engraving. The helmet predates the saber which appears to have been made in the 1920s.

Rating Definition:

The M1881 Dress Helmet is in near mint condition. The blue felt body is dark and shows no wear. The brass shield, plume socket and side buttons are bright and have never been polished. The black horse hair plume is in excellent condition. The interior of the hat shows no wear. The M1902 Officer's Saber is in fine condition. The silver-plated guard, scabbard suspension bands and drag are tarnished. The nickel-plated blade is tarnished and most of the gold wash on the etched surfaces has faded but the blade remains in very fine condition. This is a showy M1881 Dress Helmet and Deluxe M1902 Officer's Saber that would compliment any U.S. military collection.
