Description:

Remington Model 1863 Rifle manufactured in 1863. The rifle has a blued barrel, casehardened lock plate and hammer and brass barrel bands, trigger guard, patch box and buttplate. The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The lock plate is dated "1863" behind the hammer and roll-stamped with the Eagle and Shield motif over "U.S." followed by "REMINGTON'S/ILLION, N.Y." in front of it. The top of the barrel is dated "1863" adjacent to the bolster and stamped with two sets of "V/P" proof and inspection marks over an "Eagle Head". "STEEL" followed by "H.S.L." is stamped on the left barrel flat. Two script Ordnance inspection marks are located on the left stock flat. The sword bayonet has a twenty inch, bright fullered blade with cast brass guard with ribbed grips. The guard is stamped with "P" and "C" sub-inspection marks. The bayonet is complete with the original scabbard with black leather body and brass throat and tip.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle barrel retains approximately 70% of the original blue finish and the lock plate has strong case colors. The barrel has some scattered surface rust. The stock is in good over-all condition with moderate handling wear. The rear sight is missing the two folding leaves. The bayonet is also in good overall condition with some moderate age discoloration and some scattered pitting. The brass forend, barrel bands, trigger guard and buttplate have a mellow, un-polished patina. The stock is in very good condition. The bayonet is in very good condition with scattered age discoloration and some light pitting. The scabbard is in good condition. This is a solid example of the last percussion rifle purchased under government contract.
