The barrel is marked "D.H. HILLIARD / CORNISH, N.H." and "REMINGTON" and features an unusual peep sight consisting of a piece of flat stock with a decorative finial secured to the barrel by a screw and is adjustable with a leg that engages serrations in the barrel tang. There is an attractive area of hand cut floral engraving just ahead of the tang sight's finial and on the rear of the barrel tang. The hammer is stamped "295". The tiger maple stock features a molded oval cheekpiece and 10 German silver inlays of various shapes including stars, diamonds and rectangles with a brass buttplate, toe plate, trigger guard and trigger plate. David Hall Hilliard was a prolific builder of under hammer guns in many styles including target rifles, sporting rifles, shotguns and pistols. Hilliard started in business in 1842 in Cornish, New Hampshire, until his death in 1877.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel is a light silver gray with scattered areas turning a light to dark brown. The stock is in good condition with most inlays intact. Mechanically fine.

B) D.H. Hilliard Under Hammer Percussion Target Rifle

Manufacturer: Hilliard D H
Model: Percussion
Type: Rifle
Gauge: 50
Barrel: 28 1/2 inch octagon
Finish: brown
Grip:
Stock: ash/oak
Item Views: 2793
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 77
Class: Antique
Rating:

OC - FINE- all original parts; over 30% original finish, sharp lettering, numerals and design on metal and wood; minor marks in wood.

Description:

The barrel is marked "D.H. HILLIARD CORNISH, N.H. 2273" and "3 --- 1 1/2" under the barrel. There are two rear sights on the barrel, one a typical sporting style and the other a bar type barrel mounted peep sight with graduations to 300 yards and an adjustable slider block. The hammer is stamped "2273". The stock is either oak (or ash) with a brass trigger guard and shotgun buttplate. The consignor states that the underside barrel markings have been deciphered mostly from research done by Ray Mitchell. The first number, usually a 6 found on a rifle and a 2 usually found on a pistol, is a designation of a distance in rods that the piece was tested at (6 rods about 100 ft., 2 rods 35 feet). The second number is the inches of powder in the bore or the charge of powder the rifle was tested with. The third number is usually a fractional number referring to the size of the group that was obtained when the piece was tested. There sometimes appears the initials C.S. (Chase Smith), G. (George Hilliard (G.E.H.) and C. (Charles Hilliard) referring to who tested the firearm. If no initials, then David probably did the testing himself.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel is a smooth splotchy plum brown showing high edge wear. The stock is very nice with minor handling marks. The action is fine.
