OC - FINE- all original parts; over 30% original finish, sharp lettering, numerals and design on metal and wood; minor marks in wood.

Description:

The barrel is marked "D.H. HILLIARD / CORNISH / N.H." on the top left flat and "3 --- 15/16" flowed by "MUZZY & CO" on the bottom flat. The serial number 142 is stamped on the face of the muzzle. There are two rear sights, an adjustable sporting rear and a flat bar type peep sight secured by a screw to the barrel; the front sight is a globe and pin. There is no provision for a ramrod. The stock is mounted with a crescent iron buttplate and trigger guard. David Hall Hilliard was a prolific builder of under hammer guns in many styles including target rifles, sporting rifles, shotguns and pistols. Hilliard started in business in 1842 in Cornish, New Hampshire, until his death in 1877.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel is gray tuning a light plum brown with random light speckling. The stock is fine and has been refreshed with a coat of varnish. The action is fine.

Description:

The barrel is marked "T. HEATON" and "REMINGTON / CAST STEEL". The barrel is turned at the muzzle for a bullet starter and has an old dime for a front sight and an adjustable sporting rear. The barrel is grooved for the ramrod and has three ramrod pipes. The barrel is heavy and measures 1 3/8 inch across the flats. The stock is made of an exceptional piece of crotch grain walnut with a Schuetzen style buttplate, the trigger guard acting as the under hammer main spring.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel is grey with scattered patches of light oxidation with moderate high edge wear. The stock has moderate age checking through the highly figured area and has been lightly sanded long ago. The buttplate has moderate pitting. Mechanically fine.
