Description:

This is an example of a scarce M1 Carbine with Irwin-Pedersen marked receiver assembled by Saginaw Steering Gear in 1943. This carbine is from the second contract issued to Irwin-Pedersen that falls into serial number block (3,212,520-3,250,019) which was eventually assigned/manufactured by the Saginaw Steering Gear Division of General Motors after the Irwin-Pedersen contract was cancelled for unsatisfactory performance. The receiver heel is marked: "IRWIN-PEDERSEN/3214718" and the chamber has the standard M1 Carbine nomenclature. The barrel was correctly manufactured by Underwood-Elliott-Fisher and is stamped "UNDERWOOD/12-43" above the ordnance '"shell & flame" insignia and "P" proofmark with early type 2 barrel band. The receiver is fitted with the early, 'flip' rear sight stamped "S" on the right side and the front sight is unmarked. It has a flat bolt that is stamped "IP" on the side of the lug. It has a unmarked, milled trigger housing and hammer that is fitted with a round, un-checkered safety marked "IP-A". The magazine release is marked "M". The operating slide is marked with a single partial "U" proof and an Ordnance Bomb proof. The two-rivet walnut handguard is unmarked. The carbine has a dark, gray-green parkerized finish with walnut stock and handguard. The stock is a low wood version with the "I" oiler slot and the right side is stamped with a cross-cannon ordnance proof with a boxed "SG" cartouche below that. The handguard is the early two-rivet version with a small "SG" stamped on the underside. It is complete with a green canvas sling and has no magazine.

Rating Definition:

Professionally restored to correct WWII specifications overall with 99% of a late dark gray parkerized finish overall with all of the wear confined to the bolt. The stock and handguard are both in excellent showing minimal handling marks. A very nice representative example of a rare Irwin Pedersen Contract WWII M1 carbine.
