Description:

This Springfield Armory Model 1887 Hospital Corps Knife is etched "HOSPITAL CORPS/ U.S. ARMY." in a panel on the left side of the blade. The knife has a turned and grooved maple handle with nickel-plated brass cap and cross-guard. The knife is complete with a "Type 1" black leather scabbard with belt loop and brass throat. The inside of the belt loop is stamped "WATERVLIET/ARSENAL" in two lines. Springfield Armory manufactured a total of 1056 of these scarce knives in 1889 and 1891.

Rating Definition:

The knife is in good overall condition. The etched side of the blade is fine with crisp etched markings and most of the polish. The opposite side of the blade has some significant pitting near the guard although the balance of the blade is bright. The pommel, guard and grip are in very good condition. The scabbard is in excellent condition with most of the original finish. Sharp markings, tight stitching and minimal wear. This is a good example of a scarce Springfield Armory made Model 1887 Hospital Knife.
