Description:

The Model 1885 was the first of many Browning patents that Winchester would purchase. It was the first single shot rifle manufactured by Winchester and was offered in 45 center fire calibers. This particular rifle was manufactured in 1886, the second year of production. Blade front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight on a number 3 barrel marked with the two line address and "45-70" at the breech. The lower tang is marked with the serial and patent date. The barrel is blue with the remaining surfaces casehardened. Mounted on a smooth Schnabel forearm with ebony insert and straight grip stock with crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Good as refinished. The barrel has a smooth brown balance with smooth dark patina in the protected areas strongest at the breech and some minor pitting. The rest of the partially cold blued metal surfaces have a mixture between a smooth dark and smooth gray patina with some pin prick pitting mostly on the frame. The left side of the forearm has been repaired (a hairline crack is noticeable) and a minor gash appears on the buttstock, otherwise the sanded and refinished wood has some minor scratches. Mechanically fine with exception of the firing pin being gone.
