Description:

Introduced in the 1800's, police boxes were actively used in cities in the years leading up to the widespread use of car mounted and personal radios. Mounted on a 51" tall black painted pole, the box is blue painted cast iron, 12 1/2" wide, 7 1/2" deep and 21" tall, with the front door decorated with a fist clenching lightning, "POLICE/ TELEGRAPH", a brass plate marked "43", and "THE GAMEWELL CO/ NEW YORK". In the center of the door is the "CITIZEN'S/ KEY" slot; prominent and respected citizens were often given keys that could be used to alert the station without granting access to the inner workings of the box. Inside the outer box is an inner cast iron box which holds the working guts, and had mounted on the outside the mouthpiece, a corded earpiece on a hook, a brass crank for the onboard generator, and a 5 position switch, marked "WAGON", indicating an arrest requiring a pickup, "TELEPHONE", and a "REPORTS" section numbered 1 through 3, for officers to report in during the course of their rounds. On top of the outer housing is a stand for a lit glass ball, frosted white with blue "POLICE" text (included).

Rating Definition:

Excellent as professionally restored, with some paint loss on the edges and minor wear. Generator in working order, though actual transmitting ability not tested.
