Description:

The right side of the nickel plated receiver is marked: " MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS / 1882.". The opposite side is marked: "EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / DEC. 6, 1859" followed by "1873". The lower tang is marked with the serial number. The Model 1873 Maynard rifles used a cartridge with a very thick rim which could be used to extract them from the barrel. The rifle has a heavy, half octagon barrel without a forearm, but equipped with a combination beech front sight and rear leaf sight. The tang is drilled for a sight mount. Mounted on a straight grip stock.

Rating Definition:

Good. Overall the barrel has a smooth brown patina mixed with smooth gray patina near the breech. The casehardened frame is mostly "silvered out" with the balance a smooth dark patina. The buttplate has a smooth gray patina with some minor pitting on the buttplate. There is a chip on the wrist, otherwise the period reoiled stock is very good with some minor scratches and dings and a few minor pressure dents. The markings are weak, but legible. Mechanically fine.
