Description:

Born in 1940, artist David Manuel often creates sculptures that feature an animal or Western theme. This patina bronze sculpture depicts a scene inspired by the Big Hole Battle, one of four major battles in the 1877 Nez Perce War. The sculpture is an emotional depiction of a Nez Perce man defiantly aiming a trapdoor rifle in his right hand while holding a small child in his left hand. A woman is at his feet, with her right arm around his leg and the left hand grasping at the child. It is signed by the artist, titled "HIS HEART LAY WOUNDED / BATTLE OF BIG HOLE", dated 1978 and numbered "17/20" on the base. The sculpture is attached to a wood base. Measures 17 x 16 x 15 inches. Consignor included appraisal from the manufacturer.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, with some light handling marks mostly on the wood base.
