Description:

Born in 1940 in Walla Walla, Washington, David Manuel entered the art business at age 3, when his mother began selling his drawings to Airman at a nearby training base. He established himself as a serious talent by winning a national art contest judged by none other than Norman Rockwell. Over the course of his career he has been acknowledged as the official artist of the Oregon Trail Coordinating Council, U.S. Marshall Bicentennial Committee, and John Wayne's Wayne Enterprises. He also has art in the headquarters of the Department of Justice and the White House. Sculpted in 1982, "The Recall" depicts a trio of U.S. Cavalry men calling for the remainder of the troops to assemble at their posts. In the center is the sergeant, Colt revolver in his left hand and Cavalry flag in his right, to his rear a young soldier sounding the trumpet, and at the lead a volunteer in a fringed shirt, single shot rifle resting across the saddle, and a riding whip and revolver in each hand. The level of detail, both in the sculpting and final finish, is highly impressive. The coloration is distinct and gives the impression of a sepia-tone photograph. The sculpting is accurate down to the grain on the canvas canteen covers, the bulging veins on the horses legs and undersides, and the individual parts of the trapdoor actions. Equal attention is paid to the base, which depicts rocky, broken terrain with a fallen tree in the foreground. On the rear is the marking "THE RECALL/ 4/12/ Manuel/ © 1982". Mounted onto a wooden plinth, total measurements are 22 inches wide, 44 inches long and 37 1/2 inches tall. Also included is a display stand, finished in textured brown with a painted design in the style of Native American beadwork on two of the sides across the top, measuring 44 1/4 inches long, 29 inches wide and 27 3/4 inches tall. Consignor included appraisal from the manufacturer.

Rating Definition:

Superb. A few minor handling marks are visible on the plinth and some scuffs on the base, otherwise excellent. An exemplary example of the sculptor's art, and a showpiece suitable for any advanced collection of Western or American art.
