Description:

National Pony Express Centennial Association historical marker in high relief bronze casting. It is 50" long by 30" wide and commemorates the 100 year anniversary of the Pony Express, 1860-1961. It depicts the overland route taken from St. Joseph, MO to Sacramento, CA and the various way stations along the route. It also features the Pony Express horse and rider with portraits of the founders/owners/operators, Waddell, Majors and Russell. The left border reads vertically "1860-1861" and the right border reads vertically "1960-1961". The upper right corner text states "120 CELEBRATED RIDERS/RODE 650,00 MILES WITH/ONLY ONE RIDER KILLED BY/INDIANS, ONE SCHEDULE/NOT COMPLETED AND/ONE MAIL LOST". Bottom portion reads "PRESENTED BY/DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER - CHAIRMAN/WADDELL F. SMITH - PRESIDENT/SHERRILL HALBERT - VICE PRES./JAMES H. PHILLIPS - DIRECTOR. Signed by the artist, "M. Breckenridge". Similar signs serve as national historical site markers that line the route today.

Excellent condition. Some minor discoloration and peeling of coating due to age and weathering.
