Description:

Sharps & Hankins Navy Model Carbine with distinctive leather covered barrel and firing pin mounted on the recoil shield, one of 6686 produced for the U.S. Navy; the leather cover was added to protect the barrel from sea water. The barrel is fitted with fixed front and adjustable tangent rear sights. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "SHARPS/&/HANKINS/PHILADA." in four lines and the left side of the receiver is stamped: "SHARPS/PATENT/1859" in three lines. The serial number is stamped on the top of the barrel tang and matching numbers on the bottom of the barrel, and internal lever parts.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The black leather protective cover is solid, with wear limited to age cracking and some very minor flaking on the lower edges. The receiver, hammer and lever retain at least 90% of the original casehardened finish with strong mottled case colors. The brass buttplate has a mellow patina. The stock is in excellent condition with raised, 'feathered', grain and only minor handling marks. The markings are crisp. The carbine functions perfectly. This is a very fine example of an important Civil War U.S. Navy firearm.
