Description:

This is an example of a New Model 1859 carbine that was converted to a metallic cartridge breech loader following the Civil War. The carbine has the relined bore with three-groove rifling. Fitted with a sling bar with ring, Lawrence folding rear sight graduated to 800 yards and stock without the patch box. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "NEW MODEL 1859" at the breech. The rear sight base and receiver have the standard Sharps and R.S. Lawrence patent markings, with the serial number stamped on top of the receiver tang. Mounted on a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with iron buttplate. The left side of the wrist has a "EF" cartouche and a "DFC" cartouche on the left side of buttstock.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains approximately 80% plus thinning arsenal blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The barrel band has a smooth gray patina. The receiver and buttplate retain approximately 60% of the case colors with the balance a smooth gray patina. The casehardened components have had a protective coating applied. The wood is also very fine with some minor dings and scratches. The cartouches are clear and crisp. Mechanically excellent.
