Description:

Only about 2,300 of these Standard 31 caliber models were manufactured circa 1854 to the late 1860s and features a 7 round cylinder. The top strap is absent of any marking and the left rear of the frame is marked "BEALS PATENT. / SEPT. 1854" The cylinder is etched with floral patterns and has notches at the front and rear edges. The serial number is marked on the left side of the front strap under the grip and each grip panel is stamped inside with the matching number. The "walking beam" takes its name from part of the mechanism's similarity to the walking beam steam engine of the day patented by Fordyce Beals and is operated by the ring trigger and pushes against the front row of notches when the trigger is pushed forward and the rear row when it is pulled. In its rear position it presses the sear, dropping the hammer and firing the gun. The hammer must be cocked before the trigger can be operated. Brass pin front sight and notch rear sight, shield covering the left side of the cylinder checkered hammer, ring trigger and smooth two piece grips.

Rating Definition:

Very good. All metal surfaces, except the cylinder, have a brown patina with some minor pitting on the frame, hammer and cylinder shield. There is some strong traces of the dark original blue finish in the protected areas of the recoil shield. The cylinder has a smooth silver gray patina with most of the etching visible. The grips are good with exception of several minor dents in the bottom of the left panel, otherwise there are a few minor dents and light handling marks. The frame marking is crisp. The action is fine.
