Description:

According to the included (laminated) factory letter, this revolver was shipped 15 March 1890 to W.G. Parsons (address unknown). Grips, barrel, caliber and finish are verified by the letter. This model was designed on the 44 Single Action frame at the request of world famous Smith & Wesson target shooter, Ira Paine and was the first model offered by Smith & Wesson with factory target sights, available in 32-44 and 38-44 calibers. Please note that Lot #299 in this sale is a Number Three Target sent to Mr. Payne himself, with factory documentation. Raised bead front and adjustable rear sights, with the two line "REISSUE" address and patent markings, flanked by Maltese crosses. Matching numbers on the barrel, latch, cylinder and frame. Casehardened hammer and trigger guard, smooth trigger and checkered two piece hard rubber grips with Smith & Wesson imprints.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with 70% of the nickel finish, showing some dents concentrated around the side plate and trigger pin, pitting ahead of the cylinder on the barrel, which shows a bright gray steel patina, along with some scattered spotting and dings. Casehardened parts have turned a nice silver, with traces of color in the protected areas. Grips are very good, with mild handling marks. Mechanically good.
