This is an example of a flintlock musket manufactured in Austria and then converted to percussion in 1859. These muskets were reportedly run through the Union Naval Blockade and used by Confederate troops during the Civil War. The barrel is marked with a lion over "W" proof on the right side at the breech just ahead of the nipple, the opposite side is marked "1859" and "39". The lock is marked with a recessed "JP / 39" directly ahead of the hammer and the heel of the buttplate is marked "B" above the screw and "3378 / 1838" below the screw. The left side of the front barrel band is marked with "39" and "* / B". The muzzle end of the barrel has a bayonet lug, brass front sight on the forward barrel band and folding rear sight graduated to 800 yards. Full straight grip stock secured by 3 barrel bands with an unreadable round cartouche on the right side of the buttstock near the buttplate and crude period "FW" carved ahead of that. Iron ram rod with trumpet head and fitted with a brown leather Confederate sling.

Good. The metal surfaces have been cleaned and show a silver gray, discolored on the barrel with some minor spotting. The stock has been lightly sanded and varnished and remains good with a small gouge on the upper left side at the barrel tang, some minor chipping at the rear of the left side plate and some scattered dents and scratches. The sling is fair with age cracking and some mildew, otherwise the leather is supple. The action is fine.
