Description:

Date of production of this music box is unknown, but it is a highly advanced example of a multi-tune music box. Using only a single cylinder, this box is capable of playing ten different tunes by leaving an extra fraction of an inch between the teeth of the comb, and shifting the drum slightly to change which pins the teeth are struck by. In addition, along the back of the case are a wood faced drum with 5 strikers, 5 bells with a bee-shaped striker for each, and a skin faced drum with 7 strikers. Controls consist of three levers next to the comb, which are used to manually actuate the strikers for the percussion elements, a silver finished brass crank on the left side for operating the drum, a pair of switches on the right hand side, marked "CHANGE/ REPEAT" and "STOP/ PLAY" and a small plate with brass arm, with numbers 1 through 10. A hinged glass lid covers the mechanism, and a small paper label tacked into the lid gives the list of songs, and is decorated with cherubs among musical instruments with composer's names on banners, along with a woodland scene in the background. The case is constructed from fine hardwood, with multi-colored varnish and inlays to give checkerboard patterns around the front and lid, and an array of musical instruments, sheet music and flowers on the lid.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The case shows some wear and finish loss, along with a crack in the lid. One of the internal panels on the right hand side has loosened, and the lid arm is in minor need of repair. Superb in both function and sound.
