Description:

This is an example of a Winchester Pattern 14 Rifle fitted with BSA Model 1918 Telescopic Sight. This is one of a small group of Pattern 14 MK I*W(T) that were manufactured by the British for Irish Free State during the early 1930s. This rifle has the distinctive encircled "FF" Irish Free State marking on the back on the rear scope mount and the telescopic sight tube is stamped with the "stacked rifles/B.S.A." trademark. The Irish Pattern 14 Sniper Rifles were never used in action and were sold as surplus in the United States by the Irish government during the 1950s. The rifle and scope have a matching, dull blue finish. The bolt is bright. The stock and handguard are oil-finished black walnut. The receiver markings are covered by the scope mounts; the right side of the rear sight protective "ear" is stamped with the serial number: "W63536". The left side of the receiver is stamped with the British "Broad Arrow" property mark and British Crossed Pennant/"G.R." proofmark. The bolt handle is stamped with the Winchester "W" on the bottom and the serial number "63536" on the top. A five-pointed star is stamped on the bolt handle and the ejector. The right side of the stock is stamped with "IW" in a circle just in front of the brass identification disk. The end of the stock forearm is stamped "W/64". The telescopic sight is roll-stamped "MODEL/1918" over the eyepiece and has the "stacked rifle/B.S.A." trademark roll stamped on the scope tube between the rear sight ring and the elevation drum. "63356" is stamped on the right side of the scope tube below the elevation drum. The telescopic sight has a post and cross-hair reticule and the rear sight has the fine elevation adjustment fitted to British Pattern 14 Sniper Rifles. The long-range volley front and rear sights on the left side of the receiver and forearm were removed during the sniper conversion. The rifle is complete with an Australian canvas covered scope can which will fit either the Australian Model 1918 or the BSA Model 1918 telescopic sight.

Rating Definition:

Fine as arsenal refurbished. The rifle retains 90% of the dull blue arsenal finish. The stock and forearm were lightly sanded during over-haul and have rounded edges on the grasping grooves and light markings on the stock. The stock and handguards are in very good condition with scattered minor handling and sanding marks. The stock serial number is not visible. The telescopic sight markings are crisp. The telescopic sight optics are dusty but are in good overall condition. The scope can has moderate wear and is in very good condition. This is a very good example of a Winchester Pattern 1914 MK1*W(T) Sniper Rifle.
