This is an example of a World War I GEW 98 rifle that has been arsenal reworked in the 1930s for the SS. The barrel has been shortened to 24" and a tangent rear sight installed. The top of the receiver ring is blank and the left side is marked with an Imperial eagle, the serial number, a "crown/N proof and the crown of another proof visible. The right side is marked with three crown over script letter proofs. The left side receiver wall is marked "GEW 98.". The left rear of the barrel is marked with the matching serial number and the lazy S/deathhead stamp, the right side is marked with an "eagle/20" proof mark. Matching numbers on most parts, the floor plate and attaching iron have been renumbered to match. All parts are milled, hooded front sight and tangent rear sight is graduated to 200 meters. Mounted with a pistol grip walnut stock with cupped buttplate and skull and cross bones stamp in the wrist. Complete with a slotted cleaning rod, brown leather sling and bayonet with metal scabbard. The bayonet has a serrated Bakelite handle and is marked "1676 / a" on one side and "MUNDLOS" on the other. One throat end side of the scabbard is marked with the matching number and the other "MUNDLOS / 39".

Arsenal refurbished with 98% plus blue finish remaining, with some minor wear and thinning on the front sight hood, and some minor wear on the bolt from cycling. The stock is excellent with only mild handling marks. The sling is very good. The bayonet is very good plus with some thinning and wear. The scabbard is good with some wear and a small amount of light spotting.
