Description:

Measuring 35" in length, the Dao is a variation on the Dha short sword common in Southeast Asia, with the Dao most seen in areas of India and northern Burma. Blade is 19" long, widening to 1 3/4" at the square tip and nearly 2/5" thick at the base, with a small "sun" stamp on the left side. Round profile grip, with a darkened copper disc at the base of the blade, with a fine silver collar, decorative bands and an onion shaped pommel, and a central section of carved ivory, showing a number of intertwined figures. Wooden sheath, painted black with gold decorations, each side showing 3 panels of demonic figures in combat, with an open top face and blackened copper throat and tip.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The blade shows a mixed aged patina, with light scratches and handling marks. The pommel is dented, with a bit of loose wire, and the silver components show an attractive aged patina. Carving detail on the grip is very good, with fine color. Sheath is good, with some flaking on the edges, smooth loss of gold paint near the throat and mild handling marks overall.
