Description:

Sharps New Model 1863 Civil War Carbine converted under Ordnance Department contract by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company to the caliber .50-70 center fire cartridge in 1867. The carbine has the original six-groove barrel and is fitted with the standard Lawrence folding leaf rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The barrel is marked with the three line Sharps address ahead of the rear sight, "NEW MODEL 1863" at the breech end and "RSL" inspection on the left side of chamber reinforcement ring directly ahead of the receiver. The serial number is located on the upper tang. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the two-line Sharps 1848 patent date and the lock is stamped with the two-line Sharps 1852 patent date and the two-line R.S. Lawrence 1859 patent date. The stock is absent of any markings.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 90% plus slightly faded blue finish with some minor spotting and some thinning and wear on the muzzle. The receiver retains 40% original fading case colors with the balance having a smooth silver gray. The lock retains 90% vivid case colors. The buttplate shows 30% faded case colors mixed with a smooth silver gray. The wood has been refinished and remains fine with a couple small minor gouges and a few minor dents and dings overall. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. A nice example of an important Indian War cavalry carbine.
