Description:

This is an excellent example of an all original, fully automatic Colt Model 1921 Thompson Submachine gun. These early models exhibit the finely machined and blued metal parts and components with a bright polished bolt and an oil finish on the wood components. These early guns were the quintessential classic submachine gun used during the depression era gangland warfare by the early law enforcement and the FBI. Ultimately they were adopted by the Military and used through out WWII, Korea and even into Vietnam in a later "M1A1" war expedient configuration. It is estimated that only approximately 15, 000 sets of 1921 parts were produced with almost all of those parts being used to produce the more successful later Model 1928A1 configuration, making these early 1921 sub machine guns a very scarce weapon. The left side of the receiver is marked "MODEL OF 1921" over the serial number "5402" and farther back on the receiver it has the correct 5 line markings of "THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN, / CALIBRE 45 AUTOMATIC COLT CARTRIDGE, / MANUFACTURED BY / COLT'S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO. / HARTFORD CONN. U.S.A." The right side is marked "AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION / NEW YORK U.S.A." with the five line patent dates farther forward, along with the circled "JHB" inspectors mark of Major John Barret, directly behind the ejection port. The left side of the lower receiver assembly is correctly marked with "FULL AUTO" and "SINGLE" along with "FIRE and SAFE" markings behind that. These early production sub machine guns are very distinctive in that they have the desirable early finned barrel to aid in cooling when firing in a full-automatic, the fully adjustable Lyman tangent rear sight with sight protectors that is graduated from 100-600 yards, the walnut vertical fore grip and a detachable walnut butt stock with the butt trap which holds an original nickel plated Thompson oilier. The example also has the correct early, one-piece heavier steel buffer with the pilot without the fiber disc. The gun is complete with a polished and matte blued 50rd Drum magazines; one made by the Seymour manufacturing company and the other one by Auto Ordnance Company, three 20 round blued stick magazines, all made by the Seymour company, one canvas case for the drum magazine, a small metal cleaning case containing two nylon cleaning brushes, a spare firing pin, extractor, three spare small springs and a brass pull through with string, an envelope from the Auto Ordnance Company containing an original Auto Ordnance sales brochure and company letter with an Army technical manual dated October 1942, a steel cleaning rod, one 50 round box of original Remington 45ACP ammo all contained in a modern made FBI style carrying case that houses the gun and accessories. NOTE: This is a fully transferable NFA Class III Firearm currently on a Form 4. You are required to check your state and/or local laws as to whether or not you may own this. This weapon can be transferred to a Class III dealer at no charge. Buyer pays all other transfer fees and stamps.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% plus of the original blue finish showing edge and high spot wear with some minor thinning on the compensator. The stock and pistol grips are all in original condition showing a nice matching dark color. The upper and lower receivers have matching numbers and the various components are all in the same condition as the sub machine gun. Mechanically excellent.
