Description:

This is a variant example of a WWII K98 double claw scoped rifle. These rifles were assembled using both Mauser and Steyr produced rifles and all were fitted with the Czech "dow" center adjustment/focus scope. These rifles used the WWI style scope mounting system of double claw bases dovetailed to the top of the front and rear receiver ring. The top of the receiver ring is marked "bnz" and "4". The left rear of the barrel is marked with the serial number and the right side with an "eagle/WaA038" proofmark. The left side wall is marked "Mod. 98". The rifle has the late war stamped trigger guard and milled floor plate and barrel bands. The serial numbers on the visible parts are matching, except for the bolt assembly which is numbered 9909d. The scope as noted is a late war center focus model that is correct for this style of sniper rifle as produced by the Czechoslovakian firm of Opticotechna. It carries the correct factory wartime code of "dow" followed by a blue cross and it is fitted with a set of original double claw rings with the two locking levers on each side of the rear ring. The elevation adjustment ring has provisions for 800 meters (1-8), has the standard post reticule and leather lens caps. The rifle has the standard late war laminated stock and handguard and it is fitted with a smooth cupped buttplate and is absent of any proofmarks. Complete with a cleaning rod an original brown leather sling and "Mod 98" marked winter trigger.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle retains 75% original blue finish with thinning and wear on the barrel bands, rear portion of the barrel and front receiver ring. The floor plate retains 25% original finish with the balance having a smooth brownish patina. The trigger guard has a smooth silver gray with strong dark original finish in protected areas. The stock is very good with scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The sling is very good. The scope is very good with some thinning, light spotting and clear optics. The strap on the lens caps has separated, otherwise the caps are very good. Markings are clear and the action is excellent.
