Description:

Magnificent Imperial German Hunter's Dagger with Damascus blade, stag horn grip and brass pommel, counterguard and quillion. The knife is complete with a black leather scabbard with brass throat and tip. The 15-inch spear point blade is acid-etched on the reverse with the recipient's name "F. Muller". The scabbard throat is engraved with an inscription surrounded by oak leaves and a target with crossed rifles. The inscription translation is: "For outstanding achievement in the Royal Shooting Contest held 18 August 1901, von Borries Major and Commandant". The blade is bright with a deep Damascus finish and relief etching. The hilt features hoof-shaped counter guards and a shell-shaped quillion. The same shell design is on the scabbard tip. This dagger is illustrated on page 185 of "COLLECTING THE EDGED WEAPONS OF THE THIRD REICH, VOLUME V" by Thomas M. Johnson and on page 275 of COLLECTING EDGED WEAPONS OF IMPERIAL GERMANY". The dagger is complete with a post-war custom made wooden case with velvet lining.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The bright-finished blade has some minor pitting on the tip and edge. The acid-etched presentation and Damascus finish are crisp. The brass quillion, counter guard and pommel on the knife and the scabbard throat and tip have a mellow patina. The stag horn grip is in perfect condition. The black leather scabbard body is in excellent condition with tight stitching and no flaking. The scabbard inscription is sharp and clear. This is a magnificent, well documented, example of a presentation Imperial German Hunter's Dagger.
