Description:

This is a fine example of a desirable Nicholas-Noel Boutet custom made military officers flintlock musket. The only visible markings is "BOUTET / VERSAILLE" with decorative "B" and "V", on the lock ahead of the hammer. The breech end of the barrel has three gold inlaid recessed proofmarks and there is a gold inlaid circle design around the upper flats on the breech end. All iron mountings, bayonet lug on the bottom of the muzzle end of the barrel, sling swivel mounted on the middle barrel band and front of the trigger guard, iron ramrod with a trumpet head and mounted with a full straight grip stock with a dished cheek area and iron buttplate. Nicolas-Noel Boutet was a gun maker in Versaille, France from 1793 to 1818. He was named "directeur-artiste" of the newly formed Versailles Arms Manufactory. While the factory was the principle producer of regulation weapons for the French armies, Boutet was also charged with creating richly decorated arms for presentation to military heroes and foreign heads of state. Many of his creations were called works of art.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, the barrel has a mix of smooth silver gray and light brown patina with some minor oxidation around the flash hole. The barrel bands have a smooth brown patina. The remaining surfaces have a smooth brownish patina. The stock is also very fine with most of the original varnish finish remaining, a small hole on the left side of the forearm just ahead of the rear barrel band and overall scattered minor dents and dings. The action needs work, the hammer does not hold a cock position. The lock markings are crisp and clear.
