Description:

The Model 1840 was the last flintlock musket manufactured by the Springfield Armory. Brass blade sight on the front barrel band, with the upper left side of the chamber marked "V/P/eagle head" and "1842" on the tang. The lock plate is marked "SPRING/ FIELD/ 1841" vertically behind the hammer and has the eagle and shield over "US" below the flash pan. Smooth straight grip stock with a trumpet head ramrod, 3 barrel bands, one sling swivel, a pair of inspection cartouches on the left side, and a "US" marked flat steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good as professionally reconverted, with areas of bright steel on the barrel, which shows a "salt and pepper" finish overall and scattered pitting. A darker patina has formed on the lock hardware, barrel bands and buttplate, with heavier pitting. Stock is fine, with some cracks, chipping and dings. Mechanically fine.
