Description:

This is an example of a Model 1836 flintlock pistol manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut, in 1842. The Model 1836 pistol was the last flintlock pistol manufactured for the U.S. military. The Model 1836 flintlock pistol was the primary cavalry handgun used in the Mexican War. In the 1850s many of these pistols were converted to percussion. The pistol has the distinctive iron swivel ramrod with button head, barrel band that extends to join the side plate and integral backstrap and buttcap. The barrel, side plate/barrel band, ramrod, buttcap and trigger guard were finished 'National Armory Bright'. The lock plate, hammer, frizzen, barrel tang and trigger casehardened finish. The black walnut, stock has an oil finish. The lock has a fenced, detachable, brass pan. An oval ear sight is located on the barrel tang and brass front sight is fitted to the barrel. The lock plate is marked: "US. / R. JOHNSON / MIDDn CONN./ 1842" below the pan. The top of the barrel is stamped: "U.S. / JH / P" perpendicular to the bore. The illegible script initials of the Ordnance Sub-Inspector are stamped in a horizontal oval on the left stock flat and the script initials of the Ordnance Final Inspector "WAT" are stamped in a vertical oval on the flat. Small "B" Ordnance sub-inspection mark is stamped on the front of the trigger guard plate.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The metal surfaces have been polished at some time and show some scattered discoloration and dings, and some minor pitting around the flash hole. The stock is also very good with some overall scattered minor dents and dings, and sharp edges on the flats. The cartouches are light. The action is fine.
