The barrel rib has the two line Hopkins & Allen address/patent dates (weak, but legible), the two line Merwin Hulbert address on the left side of the frame, and "38 CAL." on the right side of the frame. The cylinder is numbered to the gun. Fitted with pearl grips.

Rating Definition:

Good. The revolver retains 20% original nickel finish (mostly on the cylinder) with the balance a gray patina. There is some scattered minor pitting with extensive pitting on the barrel. The undersized grips are very good with a few missing chips (a large chip on the right panel), a couple hairline age cracks, and some minor scratches. The pearl has aged to a yellow color.

Catalog Page: 30
Class: Antique
Description:

It is estimated that a few thousand of these early production Merwin Hulbert spur trigger revolvers were produced (circa late 1870s). The revolver has the exposed cylinder pin, scoop cylinder flutes, recoil shield on right side of the frame with a semi-circular scooped out area to allow for loading cartridges, 3 1/2 inch barrel, and square butt, all features of the earliest production models. The barrel rib has the two line Hopkins & Allen address/patent dates, the two line Merwin Hulbert address on the left side of the frame, and "38 CAL." on the right side of the frame. Serial number on the butt, with the cylinder marked "2803". Fitted with checkered dog head embossed grips.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 70% original nickel finish with some minor flaking and some loss on the edges. The nickel has a slight frost appearance. The grips are excellent with some scattered minor handling marks. Overall the checkering is crisp. Action needs some adjustment but does function.
