Converted back to its original flintlock configuration, this rifle has a uniquely rifled bore that measures at approximately .69 caliber, has fixed sights, and marked "S. GROVE" on the top barrel flat. Page 348 of Kentucky Rifle-Golden Age by Kindig lists Samuel Grove as a gunsmith beginning work in 1782 in Newberry Township, York County, Pennsylvania. (writer believes this to be the maker of this specimen). The forend cap, stock wedges, ramrod pipes, trigger guard and buttplate are brass. Plain trigger and mounted with a smooth full length stock with four wedges.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel has a smooth dark patina with minor pitting overall (deeper at the breech and muzzle). The action has a smooth dark gray patina with some minor pitting on the lock plate. The refinished stock has some minor cracks (most are repaired), a repaired large chip near the reconverted lock, a loose fitting buttplate and some scattered minor handling marks.
