The lock plate features the Second Model markings: "J.H.MERRILL BALTO / PAT JULY 1858, / APL.9. MAY 21-28-61" under the bolster, eagle/shield marked in front of the hammer and "1863" marked behind the hammer. The breech latch is marked with the Merrill name and 1858 patent date, along with the serial number. The left rear of the barrel is marked with "V / P / eagle head" and there are single letter inspection marks on some parts. "42" is marked on the inside of the breech lever, base of the rear sight and on the brass trigger guard. Brass barrel band and "U.S." marked buttplate. Blade front and three leaf rear sights, and mounted with a straight grip stock with a saddle ring barrel with ring mounted to the left side flat and correctly without a patch box. The left side flat is stamped with a boxed "AB" cartouche.

Rating Definition:

Fair. Refinished with dark traces of blue finish on the hammer, lock and saddle ring base, and a smooth gray and brownish gray patina on the balance. The brass has been polished and remains bright. The stock is good with a few minor chips on the edge of the forearm, a moderate gouge on the forearm and overall scattered dents and dings associated with a gun of this age. The markings are clear, the cartouche is readable and the action is excellent.
