Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver with Case

This is a fine example of a Colt Fourth Model 1851 Navy revolver that was manufactured in 1864.This commercial production revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, casehardened loading lever, fame and hammer and silver-plated brass trigger guard and backstrap. The one-piece walnut grip has a high polish varnish, 'piano' finish. The pistol has the large rounded trigger guard, capping channel in the recoil shield and thick loading lever catch that are characteristic of late Fourth Model 1851 Navy revolvers. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-" in one line. The left side of the frame is stamped: "COLTS/PATENT". "36 Cal" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLT'S PATENT". The full serial number, "176839" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and backstrap. The partial serial number, "6839", is stamped on the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is complete with an American style mahogany case with blue velvet lining and five compartments. The relined case contains: (1) a japanned tin percussion tin, (2) American Flask & Cap Co., "Coat of Arms" powder flask with fixed charger, (3) two reproduction packages of six Hazards "Cumbustive Envelope" cartridges for Colt Revolving Belt Pistol, (4) blued, iron, two cavity bullet mold for round balls and conical bullets marked, "COLT'S/PATENT" on the spruce cutter and "36B" on the right block, (5) Austrian Kriegsmarine capping tool and (6) cast, conical, bullets.

ConditionFine. The revolver retains 70% of the original blue finish on the barrel. There is scattered light pitting, minor scratches and edge wear on the barrel lug. The cylinder has traces of blue with the balance a brown patina and retains nearly all of the Texas Navy scene. The cylinder pins are intact and the percussion nipples and rear face of the cylinder show only minor flash pitting from firing. The loading lever, frame and hammer have 60% of the original casehardened finish. Traces of the silver-plated finish are present in protected areas of the trigger guard and backstrap. The balance of the trigger guard and back strap have a mellow, unpolished, patina. The grip is also in fine condition with much of the original varnish finish; most of the finish wear is on the right side and lower edges of the butt. The are a number of minor dents on the bottom of the backstrap and butt. The case exterior is in very good condition. The revolver markings are sharp. The action is crisp and functions well. There are light scratches on the exterior and several pry-marks above the lock. The shield shaped lock escutcheon is missing. The blue velvet lining is relined with no tears; wear is limited to several minor compression marks. The percussion tin has been opened, is missing the label and has about 60% of the black lacquer finish. The flask is in good condition with and unpolished patina on the body, top and charger. The two cartridge packets are sealed and in excellent condition. The bullet mold is in good condition with about 30% of the original blue finish intact. The balance of the mold has a blue-gray patina with numerous small handling marks.
