Description:

This is an exceptional example of a scarce WWII J. P. Sauer and Sohns Model 30 Nazi Luftwaffe survival drilling rifle. The Model 30 Drilling was issued to Luftwaffe air crews in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater from 1941-43 to provide them with a high quality survival rifle in the event of a forced landing. They are a three-barreled combination gun double barrel 12 gauge, over a 9.3X74R rifle barrel. It is amazing that during the war the Luftwaffe was still buying these super high quality, handmade drilling rifles. The bottom of the rear barrel lug has a single "stick Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark and the underside of each barrel has the Commercial "Eagle/N" proofmarks, along with the bore and gauge/caliber markings and is dated 12 41 for the month and year of manufacture. Both shotgun barrels and the rifle barrel are marked: "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL". The serial number "337614" is located on the underside of the rifle barrel, on the left receiver rail and on the lower tang. The right rear breech area of the shotgun barrel also has the larger "Luftwaffe Eagle" Luftwaffe mark carrying the Nazi Swastika. The barrel has a matted solid rib with brass bead front sight marked "9.3 x 74.R." in a panel near the breech. These drilling have a Greener type cross-bolt receiver/action with a side mounted safety lever, tang mounted selector and cocking indicators. The receiver is marked on the inside rail with the intertwined "SS" proof for the Sauer & Sohns factory along with the Commercial Eagle "N" firing proof. Both sides of the receiver are marked with "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL" with a larger intertwined "SS" logo on the underside of the receiver and light scroll engraving on the receiver. Mounted with a nice walnut checkered stock and forend. The stock has a small European oval cheekpiece and a casehardened pistol grip cap with a black plastic serrated buttplate that has the intertwined "SS" logo of the Sauer & Sohns, factory in the center. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with a large prominent Luftwaffe Eagle/Swastika insignia.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrels retain 99% original blue finish with a few minor dings. The receiver retains 98% original bright case colors with a small area of wear on the left front. The trigger guard retains 95% original bright case colors with some fading to gray on the lower tang, and the grip cap retains virtually all of the original bright case colors. The wood is also excellent with a few overall scattered minor dings and sharp checkering. All markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. This is among one of the finest Luftwaffe Survival Drillings we have ever offered.
