This is an example of a post-WWI reworked GEW 98 rifle (HZA Wehrkniess XX assembled using a Eagle 6 Simson receiver). The top of the receiver ring is unmarked, the right side is marked with a lightning bolt and stick wing "eagle/6" proof and the left side is marked with the Nazi firing proof and serial number. The left side wall is marked "Gew. 98.". The left rear of the barrel is marked with a Nazi firing proof and the serial number followed by "Pi" and a Waffenamt "eagle/16" proof marked vertically. The right side of the front barrel band is marked with the letter "S" and a "eagle/43" proof and the rear barrel band is marked with a stick wing "eagle/25" proof. There are two crown over letter proofmarks on the floor plate mounting hardware and a small stick wing eagle proof on the floor plate. Except for the renumbered floor plate, the visible numbers match. Hooded front sight, tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters, and mounted with a laminated stock and handguard with a cupped buttplate and a Nazi eagle proof over unrecognizable marking. Complete with an unmarked Alcoso bayonet with smooth wooden handle, metal scabbard and leather frog, and a slotted cleaning rod.

Very fine as arsenal refurbished. The metal surfaces have a 50/50 mix of faded arsenal blue finish and smooth grayish brown patina. The stock is also very fine with a few overall scattered minor dings and dents. The markings remain crisp and clear. The action is excellent. The bayonet, scabbard and frog are all fine with some smooth brown patina on the scabbard, a few minor dings on the handle and a brown leather replacement retention strap on the frog.
