Description:

Colt Model 1917 Double Action Revolver manufactured in 1918. This revolver was shipped from Colt to the Springfield Armory as part of a lot of 2500 pistols on April 29, 1918. The pistol has the Colt wartime, 'brush blue' finish. The lanyard swivel is casehardened and the sides of the hammer are polished bright. The revolver has two-piece, oil finished, walnut, grips. The butt is roll-stamped: "U.S./ARMY/MODEL/1917" in four lines ahead of the lanyard swivel. The underside of the barrel is marked: "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" in one line. The "JMG" Ordnance final inspection monogram is stamped on the upper right corner of the frame. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two line Hartford address and patent dates. The model designation: "COLT D.A.45" is stamped on the left side of the barrel. The Rampant Colt trademark is stamped on the left side of the frame behind the cylinder latch. Small "H" Colt inspection marks are stamped on most components and a "3" assembler's mark is stamped on the left side of the frame above the trigger guard. The assembly number, "201773" is stamped on the inside of the frame and crane and written in pencil on the inside of both grips. The serial number, "57242", is located on the butt behind the lanyard swivel. Colt manufactured 154800 Model 1917 Revolvers between October 24, 1917 and February 19, 1919. These revolvers were widely issued to all branches of the armed forces during WWI and WWII.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains nearly 95% of the original brush blue finish; wear is confined to thinning on the grip strap and backstrap. The bore is bright. All markings are crisp. There is a dent in the lower rear of the right grip; the remainder of the grips show only very light handling wear. This is an excellent example of an important Colt Model 1917 Double Action Revolver.
