Description:

This powder horn is approximately 10 inches long with a carved wooden base. The body of the horn is uniquely carved. A layer of horn has been meticulously removed near the horn and bone spout. This 3 3/4 inch long smooth area tapers on two sides to form a unique "V" or "Y" shape in the contrasting horn. Layers of horn have also been removed from the remaining section of the body in heart and crescent shapes which are clustered near the top and accented with a simple border. A scrimshawed image of a mermaid holding a mirror and comb under a thick wavy line with a scalped border and marked with the initials "HIS" under an inscription ("See We Fools In Forest Dark / Far beyond True loves / Heart" under the number "73", possibly the date) is also featured on the body. Between each line of the inscription there is a simple vine and leaf pattern and a scroll pattern adorns the remaining surfaces.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with some minor handling marks. The spout has a couple hairline cracks .
