Description:

Produced at the Harpers Ferry Arsenal in 1845 and bored out to 58 caliber after 1857. The lock plate is marked "HARPERS / FERRY / 1845" behind the hammer and the eagle shield motif over "U S" in front of the hammer. The barrel tang and breech end barrel markings are obliterated by heavy pitting. The barrel was finished bright with brass mountings and mounted with a full straight grip stock with wooden ramrod with a tapered brass tip.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrels forward portion has a smooth polished brown and it is extensively pitted from the rear barrel band back, heaviest in the area of the bolster. This area extends to the tang and is extremely deep. The lock and hammer have a dark brown patina. The brass components have an aged patina. The stock has been freshen with a coat of varnish, has a period repair and crude fills at the wrist, a large cut-out/gouge on the upper left side and overall some minor chips, dents and dings. The stock remains solid, but the forward sling swivel is absent. The action is fine.
