Description:

This is a fine example of a Colt SAA that still retains the early style etched barrel panel marking of; "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". This etched barrel panel marking were officially replaced by the Colt factory in the early 120,000 serial number range with the much easier to produce and larger "Roll Marked" barrel stamping of; "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". This pistol was actually shipped out in May 1888 and is accompanied by a Colt factory letter that verifies the exact configuration of this outstanding revolver. The factory letter dated Jan 1986, states that this pistol had a blued finish, hard rubber grips, 7 1/2 inch barrel and was shipped to Hartley & Graham, New York in a shipment of 10 pistols. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address: "COLT'S P.T. F.A. MFG. CO/ HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A." and the left side of the pistol has the etched barrel panel reading "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". The left side of the frame is stamped in a three line, three patent date stack ending with 1875. The front left section of the trigger bow is stamped with: "44 CAL", along with a small "44" on the underside of the barrel in front of the cylinder pin, designating that it is chambered for the 44/40 cartridge. It has the early style Colt high polish blued finish on the metal parts with the color casehardened frame and hammer. The pistol has the full serial number correctly stamped on the front underside of the frame, the trigger guard and on the butt of the backstrap and the cylinder is unnumbered.

Rating Definition:

Fine condition overall with 40% of the original factory blue finish on the barrel and ejector tube, with 50% of the original blued finish on the trigger guard and backstrap. The cylinder still retains 30% of the thinning, fading blue overall. The remaining metal surfaces have turned a nice aged patina color. The frame retains 30% of it original case color finished overall mostly in the protected areas while the hammer retains 50% of it case colors also mostly in the protected area with the balance having faded to a nice brown patina. The grips are also in fine condition with no cracks, chips or damage. As noted it has matching serial numbers on the various parts and the action is very tight and locks up well with a strong main spring. A fine example of an etched barrel panel Colt Frontier Six Shooter revolver.
