A) U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Rifle

Description:

This is an assembly of three different models of Springfield Trapdoor rifles. Bayonet lug front sight, adjustable rear sight with curved base, two piece trigger guard, sling and stacking swivels and cleaning rod with button head. "V/ P/ eagle head/ P" proof and inspection marks on the barrel, "U.S. / MODEL / 1873" on the low arch breechblock and eagle and shield next to "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" on the lock. Model 1879 rear sight. Three click tumbler. Oiled stock has a "SWP / 1884" cartouche, a circled "P" proof and "U.S." marked buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine, with 60% of the original blue finish, showing areas of brown patina and scattered handling marks. Strong case colors remain in the protected areas of the breechblock, with a mixed gray and brown in the open areas. Stock is fine, with dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent.

Description:

Blade front and "R" marked Buffington rear sights, with the "V/ P/ eagle head/ P" marks on the left rear side of the barrel. Low arch breechblock, marked "U.S./ MODEL/ 1884", 2 click tumbler and lock plate marked "U.S./ SPRINGFIELD". Smooth straight grip stock, with sling swivels, "U.S." marked buttplate and "8/ NY/ 212" stamped comb, suggesting service with the 8th Regiment of Infantry, New York Volunteers. The 8th was formally established in 1847, and would be used to quell multiple riots, participated in 1st Bull Run, the siege of Yorktown, and the Battle of Gettysburg, and was later Federalized for the Spanish-American War. With ramrod bayonet, 35 3/4" long.

Rating Definition:

Fine, with 30% of the faded original blue finish, showing a mixed gray and brown patina on the remainder. Traces of original case color remain in the protected areas of the breechblock. Stock is good, with a number of pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
