Description:

This model is also known as the Hotchkiss Magazine Gun or the Model 1883. This was the first bolt action made by Winchester and it was designed for sporting and military use. The rifle had an all blue finish with a polished bolt. This model features the safety on the top left of the receiver and the magazine cutoff on the right side to the rear of the bolt handle. The left side of the receiver wall is marked with the three line address/patent dates. The left side of the barrel at the breech is marked with the "V / P / eagle head" markings, a letter "R" on top and the serial number is marked on the upper left rear of the receiver. The front sight is a fixed blade and the rear is an adjustable "ski slope" type graduated to 600 yards and marked "H.C." on the left side. One piece straight grip stock with a saddle ring base mounted on the left side, (ring and stud absent), boxed "SWP / 1880" cartouche on the left wrist, a nickel plated brass forend with one piece of the cleaning rod stored inside, and steel carbine style buttplate. Only 400 of the Second Model carbines were manufactured.

Rating Definition:

About good. The barrel and receiver have a smooth mottled gray patina with several minor dings in the area of the rear sight. The trigger guard has a smooth brown patina. The stock is cracked (but solid) at and forward of the wrist, has a smooth divot on the left side at the action and overall some minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. The rectangular boxed cartouche is faint, but visible. The action is excellent.
