This is a WWI production Model 98a carbine as manufactured by the Erfurt Arsenal. The top of the receiver ring is marked "crown / ERFURT / 1917". The right side is marked with three "imperial arsenal" acceptance proofs and the left side is marked with the serial number and "Imperial eagle". The left side wall is marked "KAR 98.". The floor plate and assembly are also marked with the "Imperial" proofs. All visible numbers match. Shrouded front sight and tangent rear sight graduated to 200 meters. Mounted with a full length pistol grip stock and handguard with Imperial proofmarks on the right side buttstock and on the wrist. Complete with a pebble grain sling. Matching serialized specimens are seldom encountered like this example.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The carbine retains 70% faded original finish with wear on the muzzle and smooth brown patina on the barrel bands, floor plate and trigger guard. There are a couple of minor scratches and dings, and mild high edge wear on the receiver. The wood is also very fine with the exception of a small gouge present on the comb, and overall some minor nicks and handling marks. The sling is very good. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
