Description:

This is an exceptional like new late production "Tool Room" M1 carbine, as manufactured by the Inland Mfg Div of General Motors. This is a very scarce M1 carbine as there were only "99" total tool room or experimental M1 carbines made with the "XC" serial number prefix by the Inland company during WWII, with this example being serial numbered 17. The consignor notes state that this specific example was originally purchased from the Rick Riessen collection (who specialized in tool room/experimental) over 20 years ago. It was presented to "Edward L Kohle" of the Monarch Marking Systems Company, as a gift for his company’s wartime efforts in support of the Inland company. In Larry Ruth's book "WAR BABY" there is a drawing of this receiver on pg 345 and the Monarch Making Systems Company is listed on pg 353 as a supplier of bolts to Inland. This example has the standard front receiver ring markings of "U.S. CARBINE /CAL .30 M1" and the rear of the receiver is marked "INLAND DIV. / XC17". The barrel is marked; "INLAND MFG DIV./ GENERAL MOTORS / 7-44". It has all the correct late WWII features such as the type two barrel band, round blued "IO" marked bolt, late type three trigger guard with the sideways "Inland" markings, an "I-I" marked hammer, "M" marked magazine release with no M2 catch, push button safety with the smooth face, correct Inland operating slide with the boxed "P" proof on the inside. It is fitted with the correct style late low wood, oval cut M1 stock with an "IO" proof inside the sling slot and the four rivet handguard is marked "HI" on the underside. Both have a nice high polished varnished finish. It is complete with one late war green canvas sling, dated 1944 on the front end.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with 98% of the original GI parkerized finish remaining with just a hint of wear on the high spots and receiver side rail with some minor scratches on the exposed section of the barrel. The stock and handguard are also both in excellent condition with only minor handing marks in a few places. Just an exceptional example of a very rare "XC" presentation Inland M1 Carbine.
