Description:

Model 1863 single action revolver manufactured by the Starr Arms Co., in New York City between 1863 and 1865. The Starr Arms Co., produced approximately 32,000 single action percussion revolvers between 1863 and 1865. Nearly all of these revolvers were manufactured under U.S. government contract. Civilian models, like this revolver, are scarce. The revolver has an 8" round barrel, high polish blue finish on the frame, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap and casehardened hammer and loading lever. The one-piece oil-finished stock has checkered panels. The lower right side of the fame is roll-stamped: "STARR'S PATENT JAN 15, 1856". The opposite side of the frame is marked: "STARR ARMS CO.". The serial number "52790" is stamped on the front of the frame below the loading lever, on the top of the six-shot cylinder and in the hammer well. All of the visible serial numbers match. A Liege "Crown/E/LG" proofmark is stamped on the cylinder. A "Star/C" proof or inspection mark is stamped above the Liege proof on the cylinder, on the right side of the frame near the top strap, on the lower right side of the frame near the patent date and on the right side of the barrel just ahead of the frame. The right side of the barrel is also stamped with a "Crown/R" proof just ahead of the "Star/C" mark. The back strap, trigger guard, cylinder and barrel are decorated with attractive and well-executed open floral and scroll engraving. The engraving was executed after the revolver was finished. Several of the proofmarks are stamped over the engraving.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The revolver retains more than 85% of the original blue and casehardened finish. There is minor finish loss on the barrel at the muzzle and two small areas of pitting on the right side of the barrel. The blue finish on the trigger guard and grip strap is thin. The back strap has a silver-gray patina with some scattered, minor pitting. The revolver has scattered, minor storage marks with several nicks in the edges of the recoil shields. Most of the dove-gray case-hardened finish is present on the loading lever and hammer. The engraving is crisp. The percussion nipples and frame show minimal flash pitting and firing wear. The grips are in very good condition with light-moderate handling wear. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. This is a very good example of an engraved, civilian model, Starr Model 1863 revolver with professional engraving and European proofmarks.
