Description:

Also known as the Model 1 1/2, 1st Issue, these revolvers were manufactured circa 1865 to 1868. This particular revolver features factory floral scroll and punch dot engraving covering the sides of the barrel lugs, cylinder and sides of the frame. The side barrel flats and lug have a simple wire border while the frame has a double wire border with floral scroll accents. The engraving was done by F.W. Martin of Springfield, Mass., who Smith & Wesson contracted as their engraver at the time. The top of the barrel is marked "SMITH & WESSON, SPRINGFIELD, MASS. / PAT'D APR. 3, 1855 & JULY 5, 1859.", the serial number is marked on the butt and stamped in the inside of the right grip panel and the assembly number "H 8" is marked on the back of the barrel lug, the front cylinder face and on the left heel of the frame under the grip. Standard German silver front and hammer notch rear sights, smooth trigger and checkered hammer, finished blue with casehardened trigger, hammer and ejection rod, and fitted with smooth two piece varnished rosewood grips. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, engraver as Mr. F.W. Martin and that it was shipped on March 21, 1866 to J.W. Storrs in New York City.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth crisp grayish brown patina with strong traces of the original blue finish in protected areas. The grips are very fine plus with 97% original varnish remaining, some lower edge wear and a few minor nicks and dings. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. There is some slight play in the barrel hinge, otherwise the mechanics are excellent. A very nice factory documented and engraved Smith & Wesson 1st Issue Model 1 1/2 revolver.
