Description:

Manufactured circa 1857 to 1860. The top of the rib is marked "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS", faint patent marking on the cylinder and the matching serial number is marked on the butt, (with a small "2" above it), and on the inside of each grip panel. It is estimated that only a handful of 1st, 1st, 6th were stamped with the "2" above the serial number. The significants of this marking remains highly speculative to collectors today. A number of theories have been explored including the "2" above the serial number being a designation for a pistol to be used in a cased pair. In fact else where in this auction is a rare cased pair of 1st, 6th which one bears the same "2". The consignor notes that both revolvers with the "2" were forensically inspected and the same die was used to stamp each. The matching assembly number "88" is marked on the rear of the barrel lug, cylinder and left frame heel under the grip. Standard blade front and notch rear sights, all nickel finish and fitted with smooth rosewood grips.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 95% of the original nickel finish with some flaking on the muzzle and scattered flaking on the frame. The exposed brass has a dark ages patina. The grips are good with 98% original varnish, a small chip on the left heel, some minor wear and tiny chips on the lower edges. There is some play in the barrel hinge and the cylinder doesn't lock up, otherwise the action functions properly.
