Description:

This is a fine example of one of the Model 1862 Sharps & Hankins carbines purchased by the U.S. Navy between 1862-1865. The carbine features the unique leather barrel cover to protect the blue barrel from rust. The leather is secured by two screws at the breech. The frame is casehardened with the 2nd Model floating firing pin mounted in the recoil shield. The stock is an oil-finished walnut with a brass buttplate. The barrel has a brass blade front sight and a tangent rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The right side of the receiver is marked: "SHARPS / & / HANKINS / PHILDA" and the left side is marked: "SHARPS / PATENT / 1859". The serial number is located on the upper tang, on the lever bar, the underside of the barrel and the underside of the frame under the lever. The carbine has no visible inspection proof or acceptance marks. Smooth straight grip stock with brass buttplate and a sling swivel.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The receiver retains 60% plus original case colors concentrated mainly on the sides with a smooth gray patina on the balance. There is dried grease on some areas. The tangs have a smooth gray patina with some minor spotting on the lower tang. The leather on the barrel is fully intact and remains with age cracking, some flaking and tight stitching. The stock is fine with a few minor dents and scratches. The buttplate has a pleasant, untouched aged patina. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. These Model 1862 Sharp & Hankins are seldom found in this fine of condition!
