Description:

Lyman Globe front sight and folding receiver peep sight with a brass telescopic sight adjustable mounts for windage and elevation. The heavy weight barrel (1 1/8 inch across the flats) has been sleeved. (Consignor notes state that the barrel has a Harry M. Pope barrel liner. Included in a newspaper clipping showing Pope examining a Winchester High Wall rifle similar to this example with the caption, "Pope may be seen examining one of his old-time target rifles, a specially designed gun with which he set a record in 1897 that stands today.") Left side of receiver has the two line Marlin address/Ballards patent date marking, with the serial number stamped on the underside. Double set triggers and finger groove nickel plated lever. Mounted with custom smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with nickel plated crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good as customized. The barrel retains 40% of the blue finish with the balance a smooth dark patina with some minor pitting and numerous minor dings. The refinished receiver retains 95% blue finish thinning to a brown patina. The lever retains 75% nickel finish with some deep pitting. The replacement wood has a couple of small putty filled repairs, a dowel filled repair on the underside of buttstock, and a few minor handling marks. The slightly ill-fitting buttplate retains most of the nickel finish. The scope optics are good, the adjustments are frozen.
